A person-centred approach to L2 learners’ informal mobile language learning

Mobile technologies provide opportunities for L2 learners to engage in complex interactions involving a multitude of cognitive, meta-cognitive, and affective factors. Understanding the process learners’ mobile language learning thus needs holistic approaches that integratively consider learner attributes their interaction with technologies. In this study, we applied person-centred approach examining self-initiated engagement activities. Data were collected questionnaire follow-up interviews. A cluster analysis performed on data yielded six types distinctly different experiences. We further found each type brought along distinct package motivational, emotional, linguistic interaction, experiences bore relationship perceived improvement. This study offers theoretical methodological insights into complexity variety inherent informal learning. Findings also inform teachers about design adaptive tailored instruction scaffolding.
